Voilà L’été

Voilà l’été !  (Summer Is Here!)

Exhibition in the Main Hall of 109 and at La Station

This exhibition reveals the recent works of the residing artists of 109 and their guests: more than one hundred artists from different generations and practices are represented, they work on the territory of the South region.

The exhibition in the Main Hall of 109 is led by the artists in the municipal studios of the city of Nice, while at La Station (a self-ran art space and the first association to have relocated on site in 2009) the show is thought by its residents.

The rule is the same for all of them: every resident invites an outside artist to show in order to create a panorama of contemporary creation. This selection is made naturally, out of elective affinities, be they visual, esthetics or simply generational. The works shown are recent, some even unseen (some were made during the confinement or shortly after): they let you see, listen to and think about this such peculiar period we are going through.

It is also the time, for these visual artists to make their practice public on their workplace: an uncommon exercise at 109 because this place is, for the visual artists, dedicated before all to the specific creation time in the studio. The public will thus be able to discover the creativity and dynamism hidden, daily, behind the thick walls of the former slaughterhouse.

For the artists in the municipal studios, they will have the opportunity of confronting their practice, usually developed in the individual studios to later be shown elsewhere, in particular in the galleries Espace à Vendre, Eva Vautier, Catherine Issert… The visual dialogue between residents, also nourished by the choice of their guests, is here unprecedented.

For La Station, it is the occasion to draw a portrait of its complex and polymorphous identity. Both an exhibition space and an artist residence, this artist-run space currently consists in fourteen artists (two musicians and twelve visual artists). Taking advantage of shared studios, they organize temporary residences, exhibitions and events all year long. Usually open onto the world, La Station only seldom authorizes itself to show its own: the exhibition Voilà l’été is the occasion for these visual artists to reveal the dialogues already operating daily within its walls. For the occasion, former residents come to exhibit, reminding that La Station is a moving structure, constantly reinventing itself with the arrival and departure of its members. Next to their guests, these artists will draw a dynamic portrait of La Station, bringing to light some chains connecting it to the current territory of contemporary art.

A special thank you to Villa Arson and Jean-Guy Carrat for their support.
